Microsoft is aware of these issues and working toward a fix. "There are some known issues with external USB-Audio devices, including AudioQuest's DragonFly, and Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system on some hardware platforms, as well as tablets running the Windows RT, including occasional and/or consistent clicks and dropouts. Until then, Audioquest has posted a note on its FAQ page: I'm told this might be a problem with overloading software buffers - but since Windows 8 is so new, more time is needed to investigate. I've turned to the people at Audioquest, along with the man who designed their Dragonfly DAC, Gordon Rankin - considered the Godfather of high-quality DACs. The sound is amazing probably 99 percent of the time. The HD6 speakers flank my TV on heavy stands. The left speaker has a sub out (actually two RCA ports) and I use one subwoofer. ![]() All of our outboard DACs reproduced the loud clicking/stuttering sounds along with the music. For music, I go JRiver on my iMac > mini Toslink optical > Wyred 4 Sound reclocker > optical > Audioengine D1 DAC > unbalanced RCA > Audioengine HD6 speakers. Still, that didn't really make much of a difference. ![]() The new Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter that was recently released now has a pass-through Lightning port that can be used to both charge your phone and provide the power required by the DAC (because, as you alluded to, Apple's firmware limits the power output of the Lightning port so it is unable to power a DAC on its own). Near the end of the review period I had some issues with noise on some of my own 96/24 and 192/24 (downsampled on the fly) recordings played back through the D1. I admit that I have not tried this with my D1 yet, but I intend to soon. But both new OSes supposedly now support USB 2.0 audio devices. Audioengine D1 DAC, usb to serial converter, Audioengine D1 DAC. Since you can't add second-party software in RT, we couldn't install the drivers needed to run our USB 2.0 DACs. ![]() We tried getting our DACs to work with a shiny, new Asus VivoTab RT. ![]() The worst results came from trying our DACs with Windows RT.
